Alberta and British Columbia long-term care residents are half as likely to land in the hospital, according to a new study.

The B.C. long-term care residents were compared to those in Ontario. More research is needed, but one reason for the difference could be an increased focus on assisted living, experts said.

“Learning how to change healthcare so that it is focused on patients’ needs instead of system needs and design quirks will be key,” said George Heckman, M.D., public health professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario.
