Up to a third of nursing homes are failing to meet behavioral health needs, while almost half employ staff without adequate behavioral health education, a recent study found.

Researchers at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry surveyed facilities during a six-month period in 2017. Thirty percent of homes reported having inadequate coordination of care between nursing homes and community providers and more than 26% had inadequate infrastructure to handle referrals and transportation.

Results were published June 5 in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
