» Select Avante Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Centers throughout central Florida are adopting the Furry Palz Program. The program, developed by behavioral health provider Thrive Behavioral Sciences, gives a robotic puppy or kitten that mimics the behavior of real sleeping animals to participating dementia patients. The “palz” help decrease isolation behaviors and depression symptoms among residents with dementia.

» The Portopiccolo Group, a family-owned private equity and investment management firm, has acquired a 120-bed skilled nursing facility based in Virginia in a $14.5 million deal. The deal was closed by Capital Funding, which provided the bridge-to-HUD loan. Portopiccolo plans to cross-collateralize the Virginia SNF with an existing 96-bed facility. Both facilities will be owned by the group. 

» BMO Harris Bank’s Healthcare Real Estate Finance group closed a $59.4 million deal that allowed Pearson Street Partners LLC to purchase The Clare in Chicago in January. The Clare is a CCRC with 50 skilled nursing beds, 14 memory care, 26 assisted living and 245 independent living units.
