There is “no relation between statin use andAlzheimer’s,” says the author of a recent medical center study on statinsand Alzheimer’s.

Some recent reports have claimed that statins(cholesterol-lowering drugs) have a positive effect in protection against thedisease. Nearly 1,000 dementia-free members of the Catholic clergy participatedin the 12-year study, which is featured in Wednesday’s edition of the AmericanAcademy of Neurology.

“The study also found no association between takingstatins and a slower cognitive decline among older people,” said authorZoe Arvanitakis, MD, MS, associate professor of the Department of NeurologicalSciences at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
