Leaders in the U.S. Senate have called for a government review of how nursing homes handle facility-managed trust funds.

A recent USA Today report prompted the request, said Senate Special Committee on Aging Chairman, Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL).

Workers can steal residents’ money from trust funds with relative ease and often are caught only through luck, according to the report. It said more than 1,500 fund-related citations were issued in the last three years.

American Health Care Association spokesman Greg Crist said robust trust fund regulations already are in place, and thefts are “tragic” but infrequent.
