A proposal that would require facilities through-out the state to prominently show their new federal star ratings has received pushback from nursing homes.
The plan, proposed by Los Angeles County supervisors, would require any nursing home receiving Medicare and Medi-Cal to display its current star rating on-site. Information about the ratings system also must be included in any admissions agreements for new residents, under the proposal. The five supervisors have petitioned Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and state health department officials to back the plan.
A total of 1,254 nursing homes in the state are subject to the new Five-Star Quality Rating System, which went into effect in December. Of those, 272 received one star and 148 received five stars.
