A new report from independent living consultant Univita Health finds that the national average annual cost for care in a private room at a Medicare-certified nursing home is slightly more than $90,000.

The report analyzes information collected from roughly 2,000 nursing homes, 2,000 assisted living facilities and 2,000 home health agencies, according to the Univita report. The report also finds that a single-occupancy room in an assisted living facility averages $3,300 per month. The national average hourly rate for home health aides provided by a certified home health care agency is $22.14 per hour, the report said.

The finding of a national average of $90,155 for a nursing home is higher than other recent report findings. A Genworth Financial report in April found the national median cost of a single-room in a Medicare-certified nursing home is $75,190 in 2010. (McKnight’s, 4/28/10) An October 2009 report from MetLife found the average yearly cost for a private room in a nursing home is $79,935 per year. (McKnight’s, 10/28/09). It calculated the average yearly cost from a sampling of 1,850 nursing homes in 87 markets.
