Healthcare facilities should avoid “heavily marketed” triclosan soaps, experts advise in updated hand hygiene guidelines.
Triclosan antibacterial soaps have proven to be less safe and effective than products such as chlorhexidine soaps and alcohol-based hand rubs, according to the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and Infectious Diseases Society of America.
Studies have found significant reductions in nosocomial infections and multidrug-resistant organisms after switching from triclosan soaps to ABHR, the researchers noted.
Results were in Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology.
