There’s a new method for measuring delirium severity in older adults from researchers at Harvard and Brown Universities and the University of Massachusetts.

The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) standardizes the measurement of delirium severity for both clinical and research uses. The new scoring system, CAM-S, was validated in adults over age 70. CAM-S scores “displayed a strong association with all clinical outcomes including length of hospital stay, nursing home placement, functional and cognitive decline, death, and hospital and post-hospital costs,” researchers said.
