CMS updates guidance on three-day stay waiver

Providers must demonstrate that a beneficiary’s skilled nursing care in a facility is “in some way” related to the coronavirus public health crisis in order to qualify for the three-day inpatient qualifying hospital stay waiver benefit, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is emphasizing.

Providers wary of waiver

Less than half of healthcare providers eligible to use the three-day hospital stay waiver available through the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative actually use it, a recent report shows.

When two midnights doesn’t equal three days

Hospital observation stays have been increasing, as have Medicare auditors’ denial of claims related to short inpatient stays on the basis that they should have been counted as observation stays. Observation stays often causes headaches for long-term care administrators and frustration for families.
