Indiana — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has given $3.75 million in additional funding to the Indiana Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program to help develop and train the geriatrics workforce.

The program has trained about 200 clinicians and 10,000 patients, family members and caregivers over the last five years.

Debra Litzelman, researcher and program director, said the training is necessary due to the growing population of geriatrics patients.

“There are so many important aspects of care for the elderly that are beyond their medical conditions that will allow them to age in place,” she said. “And that’s what this is all about.”
