Nursing homes show improvement despite bleak overall healthcare picture, states' scorecards reveal

The focus will be on patient safety when the window opens for voluntary data submission for the AHRQ SOPS Nursing Home Database from Sept. 1 through Sept. 21. Eligible providers will be nursing homes that have administered the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Nursing Home Survey on Patient Safety Culture between August 2018 and September 2022.

Participating providers will receive a feedback report displaying their results, as well as aggregated, de-identified results from all database participants for patient safety improvement purposes.

Results of the database will also be available in the SOPS Nursing Home Database Report, which will provide average scores and percentiles on the survey questions and composite measures. Results of the SOPS Nursing Home Database Report are reported in the aggregate and do not include any information identifying participating nursing homes.

Participation in the nursing home database is voluntary. Nursing homes can also review other organizations’ overall results and trending. They can then use this report to inform leadership and staff at all levels within their organization about the results from the survey as they take steps to improve patient safety culture within their facility.

The good news is nursing homes that have not previously administered the survey still have time to participate. Providers can access survey and supporting materials and learn more about database submission.
