Providers across a variety of senior care settings will learn the benefits of and best methods of providing oral care for individuals with dementia or related conditions. Poor oral hygiene has been linked to a variety of poor health outcomes. The hour-long session will begin at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday and feature the evidence-based training program “Mouth Care Without the Battle.” Presenters will include geriatrician Philip Sloan, MD, MPH; gerontologist and researcher Sheryl Zimmerman, PhD; psychologist Ann Louise Butrick; and dental hygienist Patricia Poole, RDH, MS, LPN.

Attendees will learn how to turn oral care from a challenging, often dreaded task into a specialized, personalized service that is eagerly anticipated, organizers say.  They will hear about evidence that links oral health and other health outcomes; health assessment tools; new treatment techniques; and caregiver management techniques.

The event is co-sponsored by the Pioneer Network and the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
