With the prospect of renewed attacks on Medicaid funding and potential further cuts to the Affordable Care Act on the line, providers will surely be among those glued to election results Tuesday night.

On one hand, providers have enjoyed Republican control of both chambers of Congress and the White House because it has enabled the elimination or softening of numerous regulatory measures. On the other hand, President Trump’s unexpected push for Medicaid-funding changes left nursing home leaders, among others, mortified.

If the House of Representatives switches to Democratic control, which many forecasters are predicting, the rate and magnitude of change would be expected to moderate.

At the non-federal level, a handful of states are voting on Medicaid expansion plans, while nearly three-fourths will be electing governors.

Wednesday morning, in other words, could give many providers a whole new set of political and strategic conditions to fast forward to.
