The Veterans Affairs Department plans to work with nursing schools over the next three years to help establish a nursing academy.

About a dozen nursing schools will provide faculty appointments to VA clinical nurse experts, who will train enrolled students. While the programs likely will be geared towards the special needs of veterans, the overall curriculums will focus on quality improvement and evidence-based practices.

The VA provides clinical education to nearly 100,000 health professionals each year, including students from more than 60 nursing schools. The agency hopes the initiative will help relieve a severe nursing shortage.
