A presidential candidate has staked out a position on tort reform, a divisive topic in Washington that consistently draws fire from varying lobbying groups.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) has called for caps on noneconomic and punitive damages in medical malpractice lawsuits. He said “lottery-sized awards and frivolous settlements” undermine providers.
While several bills have been introduced, all have failed to become law. Last year, the Senate vetoed the fifth tort reform bill in three years.
