Three nursing home residents of a New Orleans nursing home died Sunday trying to flee Hurricane Katrina, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office reported.

The residents, whose names, ages and sexes were not immediately disclosed, died after they were placed on a bus from New Orleans destined for a Baptist church in Baton Rouge.

One person was found dead on the bus and another was dead inside the church. A third resident later died at the Earl K-Long Hospital. This resident was one of 21 people from the bus taken to the hospital.

While the cause of death for the three was not known, many people on the bus were suffering from dehydration, the coroner’s office said. The drive time from New Orleans to Baton Rouge was several hours, according to travelers not affiliated with the nursing home bus.
