Treating patients quickly after mini strokes could dramatically cut their chances of a major stroke later, according to new research by British and French doctors.
Mini-stroke patients treated within 24 hours reduced their chances by 80% of having a more serious stroke in the next three months, two studies found. One study was published in The Lancet medical journal. The other was published in Lancet Neurology.
As a result of the findings, healthcare should now regard small strokes as major health events, Dr. Peter Rothwell of Oxford University said. The findings could change standard stroke treatment.
