Nursing homes in Illinois are on “red alert” as that state’s attorney general continues to conduct unannounced raids of long-term care facilities in search of wanted criminals, according to local reports.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan led the latest raid on Tuesday at a Chicago facility Presidential Pavilion, the Chicago Tribune reported. Three arrests were made. So far, the campaign of unannounced compliance checks has resulted in 54 warrants issued, and 14 arrests at 10 facilities across the state, according to the Tribune. Lawyers for the Presidential Pavilion pointed out that nursing homes in the state have no way of knowing if a potential resident has an outstanding arrest warrant, since current background check regulations only cover convictions.
The sweeps come as Illinois officials continue debating a massive overhaul of the state’s nursing home system. Speaking to reporters outside the building after the raid, Madigan said nursing home operators statewide are probably “on red alert that we could be showing up any morning,” the Tribune reported.
