Dr. Donald Berwick, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, finally had to face members of Congress recently, and he left them wanting more.
Berwick, who got the job this year via a recess appointment that didn’t require Senate confirmation, testified in November before the Senate Finance Committee about his support of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Some committee members, including Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), expressed anger that they did not have more time to ask Berwick about his views.
Berwick stressed the need to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations to reduce costs and promoted concepts such as accountable care organizations.
