Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) on Tuesday called for the end of advertisements opposing the new Medicare prescription drug program.

Grassley said the ads are “aimed at discrediting the program and scaring senior citizens,” according to published reports.

Moveon.org and Families USA are among the groups running the television and Internet advertisements, claiming that the new prescription drug coverage benefits pharmaceutical companies rather than the consumers, most likely senior citizens with limited resources.

Grassley defended the new prescription drug discount card program, as well, saying that at 39 town meetings no beneficiary had expressed any complaints to him about the cards, the article says. He also said he had not been approached by any beneficiaries saying they benefited from the program, however.

Families USA health policy director Kathleen Stoll says the organization has no intention of stopping the advertisements.
