A mutated gene has been linked to an inherited form of a common type of dementia called frontotemporal dementia, according to Canadian and American scientists.

Researchers identified the mutated progranulin gene that can cause inherited FTD. This type of dementia, which is incurable, causes about 15% of all dementia cases worldwide.

About half of FTD cases are inherited. It is second only to Alzheimer’s disease as the most common type of dementia.
