A new book available this month from researchers at the University of Central Florida aims to help long-term care facilities improve quality and efficiency.
The book, “Improving the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes,” is a compilation of research and articles about evidence-based approaches to improving quality and efficiency in long-term care facilities. Due, in part, to cuts in state and federal Medicaid support, many nursing homes are under enormous pressure, according to one of the book’s co-authors, Thomas T.H. Wan, professor of public affairs and associate dean for research in the College of Health and Public Affairs. To survive, nursing homes must improve quality and efficiency, Wan said.
The book’s authors began compiling the studies and reports in 2003 after receiving a grant from the National Institutes of Health. The authors hope the book not only provides an evidence-based approach for nursing homes to improve but gives lawmakers a glimpse at more appropriate ways to approach nursing home regulations. “Improving the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes,” which shares a title with a 1986 book authored by the Committee on Nursing Home Regulation, is published through the Johns Hopkins University Press.
