Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV)

The battle over healthcare reform shows few signs of easing before the end of the year.

As of press time, the Senate had just released its healthcare reform bill. Earlier last month, the House had surprised many with its passage of healthcare reform. Lawmakers voted 220-215 in favor of the bill.

Still, debate was continuing over the impact of $500 billion worth of Medicare cuts contained in the House legislation. A report released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services suggested that nursing homes and hospitals no longer would accept certain patients with this cutback.

The White House disputed these findings. Nancy-Ann DeParle,

director of the White House Office of Health Reform, also said the cuts need to be viewed in context. The healthcare industry would receive billions of dollars through increases to the number of insured Americans.
