University of Utah electrical engineers showcased a new fall detection system yesterday at the 24th Annual Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications in London.
The electrical engineers, Brad Mager and Neal Patwari, created a system using a two-level array of radio-frequency sensors placed around the perimeter of a room at two heights that correspond to someone standing or lying down.
Unlike other systems, this one does not require a senior to wear a device. The sensors send alerts when they detect anyone standing or falling. Patwari’s Utah-based startup company, Xandem Technology, plans to next make the product commercial.
Patwari is an associate professor at the University of Utah. The National Science Foundation funded the engineers’ study.
