Redefining retirement

A new book offers resources for nurses thinking about retirement.

“Redefining Retirement: Finding Meaning After Retirement from Nursing,” focuses on 26 real-world experiences from professionals who have already gone through the retirement process. It offers advice and tips, ranging from how to invest in business, stay active through volunteering and spending time with friends and family.

Authors Joanne Evans, MEd, RN, PMHCNS-BC, and Patricia A. Tabloski, PhD, GNP-BC, FGSA, FAAN, said their goal is to help retiring nurses find meaning.

“When I retired, I started talking with nurses about what they were doing and found there was a wide range of experiences,” Evans said. “I thought it would be interesting to share their stories. They share how they have continued to bring meaning to their lives through professional work, volunteering, travel, starting new businesses, spending time with family and friends, and engaging in new ventures.”

While the book focuses on nursing, it also can help other healthcare professionals, she added.
