Convicted sex offenders staying in nursing homes should be required to tell their facility about their criminal past or face consequences, a panel of the Minnesota Governor’s Commission on Sex Offender Policy said Wednesday.
Probation officers usually tell nursing homes of the convicted residents’ situations eventually, but the lag time is not enough. Panel members decided that failure to report convictions should be considered a violation of parole.
“Self reporting isn’t the perfect solution, but it’s better than what we’ve got,” said state representative Steve Strachan (R), a police sergeant on the panel.
The group plans to finalize its recommendations for change by email and another possible meeting in the next few weeks.
