Most nursing home residents with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) were not more mobile after lower extremity revascularization, according to a new analysis.
One year after the treatment, 51% of residents had died, 28% were not ambulatory and 32% had declined functionality, according to a new report in JAMA Internal Medicine. Emily Finlayson, M.D., M.S., of the University of California, San Francisco, and coauthors studied Medicare claims data for 2005 to 2009.
The authors said lower extremity revascularization should be viewed as a “palliative measure.”
