Massachusetts General Hospital investigators have created a point-of-care diagnosis system for healthcare-associated infections.
The system, called Polarization Anisotropy Diagnostics, involves taking bacterial RNA from a patient. PAD provides results in under two hours, while traditional culture can take up to five days.
PAD’s results can tell whether antibiotic-resistant bacteria is present and if there is contamination of devices. The study focused on E. coli, Klebsiella, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Staph aureus.
Study results appeared in Science Advances.
