The former business manager of two Colorado Springs nursing homes was sentenced last week to 10 years in prison and a $672,240 fine in restitution for embezzling more than $670,000 from the facilities, according to the Colorado Medicaid Fraud Unit of the Attorney General’s Office.
Judy Williamson plead guilty in November to one count of class 3 felony theft of $15,000 or more, after a grand jury indicted her last February for theft, forgery and income tax invasion.
Williamson was business manager of Mountain View Care Center from December 1998 to January 2002 and Life Care Centers of America in Colorado Springs from December 2002 to February 2003.
She allegedly wrote 680 fraudulent checks to petty cash on Mountain View’s operating account for more than $553,000. She cashed the checks for herself, the attorney general said, but recorded them as payments to the nursing home’s vendors. The accounting increased the cost report she submitted to Medicaid.
The state also charged her stealing about $21,000 from Life Care Centers of America. Williamson allegedly received cash and checks directly from relatives of Life Care’s residents, endorsed the checks to herself, and deposited them in her personal bank account.
