Charles Wesley Mumbere, a former Pennsylvania nurse’s aide, was officially crowned king of Rwenzururu kingdom in Uganda earlier this week.
Mumbere, 56, spent roughly 25 years in the U.S. after political turmoil in his home country stranded him here. For almost a decade, Mumbere worked as a nurse’s aide at Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Harrisburg, PA. He surprised his co-workers last year when he revealed himself as African royalty. (McKnight’s, 8/20/08)
Rwenzururu is a kingdom of roughly 300,000 native Banyarwenzururu, an indigenous mountain tribe. According to New Vision Online, which bills itself as “Uganda’s Leading Website,” Mumbere spent the evening before his coronation holding vigil in a traditional hut, where he participated in a variety of secret ritual. More than 20,000 people, including the Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni and dignitaries from the neighboring DR Congo, were expected to attend the gala event.
