Federal officials caused an uproar  Oct. 7 when they announced that nursing homes given certain abuse, neglect or exploitation citations would have a red open-hand “stop” icon placed next to their name in the consumer-facing Nursing Home Compare website.

The new “consumer alert icon” was to go into effect Oct. 23.

Provider leaders assailed the move and complained about the “inconsistent” survey system.

The icon could be swapped in or out monthly for facilities cited for abuse that led to harm within the past year or for abuse that could have led to resident harm in each of the previous two years.

CMS should add customer satisfaction results to the mix to better help consumers select facilities, countered Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of the American Health Care Association.
