Older Chinese American women are more likely to experience cognitive impairment than men, according to a new analysis.

Rutgers University researchers used data from multiple cognitive functions tests taken by about 2,700 Chinese American seniors to measure the prevalence of cognitive impairment.

The study found that women made up about 77% of Chinese American seniors who were found to have cognitive impairment. Additionally, women are more likely to be among people who experienced cognitive impairment at some point.

Increased attention and educational efforts could help decrease the disparity in the risk of dementia, researchers said.

The findings were published in the August issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
