The big heart needed to care for residents of long-term care communities? It’s just as necessary for those operating the administrative offices and ensuring the industry’s financial health.

“You’re making sure that the family and the resident’s assets are kept safe, that you’re being a good steward of the money you collect, and that every resident who comes through your doors gets the best possible care,” says Kristy Brown, director of SNF financial services for Quality Healthcare Resources. She was honored in the “Business Partner” category of the 2023 McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards.

Brown has dedicated her career to the financial and operational success of long-term care facilities, first as a business office manager beginning in 1983, and later as a director of operations, nursing home administrator, assisted living director and owner of a long-term care community, the Stamford (CT) Care Center.

She eventually became a financial consultant and has helped hundreds of operators improve their financial outlook and get accurately reimbursed for the care they provide.

That work has included spearheading a new skilled nursing facility financial assessment tool that features a digestible analysis of a facility’s revenue collections and cash flow paired with realistic recommendations for improvement, something she said she wished she would have had when she was running a facility.

Brown spent more than 14 years as a healthcare consultant with The Polaris Group before joining Quality Healthcare Resources in January 2022.

As one of her clients has said, “We need more people like Kristy in this industry. She’s smart, she gets the realities of being in a facility.”

The McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards program is jointly administered by McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, McKnight’s Senior Living and McKnight’s Home Care. Honorees were recognized March 7 at a gala banquet and awards ceremony in Chicago. The program’s Platinum sponsor was MatrixCare. Omnicare was a Silver sponsor, and additional sponsors included Pinnacle Quality Insight, HealthDirect and Sentrics.
