When Janie Whipple joined Benchmark Senior Living’s Academy Point at Mystic six years ago, colleagues say, she quickly became the heart and soul of the community. She transformed the reception area into a concierge hub, focusing on ways to meet any resident needs, from companionship and conversation to locating items or providing solutions.

Colleagues say that Whipple knows how to go above and beyond the call of duty, and it’s obvious by the way she makes individual connections with residents. One example is a weekly dinner date she made with a new resident who was reluctant to give up a weekly tradition of dining out on cocktails, oysters and crème brulee. Instead of letting him give up this tradition when he moved into the community, Whipple accompanied him, ensuring that they got their regular table every week.

Whipple also works to raise funds for several causes, including The Benchmark One Company Fund, Argentum’s Silver PAC, the Alzheimer’s Association’s Connecticut Chapter and the Terrie Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.

The McKnight’s Women of Distinction program is jointly administered by McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, McKnight’s Senior Living and McKnight’s Home Care. PointClickCare is the Diamond sponsor of this year’s program. PharMerica is the Silver sponsor. Additional sponsors include American HealthTech, Healthcare Services Group, Omnicare, Sentrics and ShiftKey.
