Medicare’s recovery audit contractors (RAC) program recovered $398 million in overpayments in the first quarter of fiscal year 2012, according to a government report.

While that recovered amount grew in the first quarter of 2012, RACs in turn gave $25 million back to healthcare providers, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid. Still, that’s a 68% decline over what was paid to providers in the previous quarter.

RAC audits are a hot topic among providers looking to prepare their facilities. The audits and other payment issues, including MDS 3.0, will be covered in the McKnights’ Sixth Annual Online Expo. Expert Leah Klusch, the executive director of the Alliance Training Center, will tell providers what they need to know at 10 a.m. Eastern on March 21.
