The McKnight’s Long-Term Care News website, mcknights.com, has been recognized with the highest level of honor in the 33rd annual APEX Awards journalism competition. The interactive website, which features fresh news and columns every business day, was chosen for a Grand Award in the website category. It is the publication’s 11th award in 13 years.

McKnight’s Long-Term Care News also earned a 2021 Award of Excellence in the Best News Writing category for “Point-of-care testing to the rescue.” The entry was a joint effort from Staff Writer Danielle Brown and Executive Editor James M. Berklan. It focused on the Department of Health and Human Services’ first-ever point-of-care testing program for every nursing home in the country.

Providers both welcomed the point-of-care testing tools and criticized some of the inaccuracies in the testing rollout. Deliveries were initially overstated by health officials, and providers were also saddled with added costs to keep their programs operating under the eyes of rigid regulators. The McKnight’s editorial team deftly reported developments regarding the critical testing program every step of the way.

McKnight’s Long-Term Care News has now won 40 APEX Awards of Excellence in various writing and editing categories, and 51 overall.

The APEX Awards are based on excellence in editorial content, graphic design, and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence. Organizers said award-winners were chosen from a field of nearly 1,200 entries.
