Nursing home residents were being evacuated last week in parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland as heavy rains wrecked havoc on the banks of the Susquehanna River.
Two nursing homes in Wilkes-Barre, PA — Golden Living Summit and St. Luke’s Villa — evacuated 64 residents and 55 residents, respectively. Manorcare Health Services in Kingston, PA evacuated 165 residents, The Times Leader reported. Some of the residents were relocated to other area nursing homes on higher ground, while others are staying with family members.
Parts of Maryland are experiencing the worst flood in 40 years, according to The Baltimore Sun. Of particular concern was the town of Havre de Grace, where city officials said they were worried about the 165 residents of county-owned Citizens’ Care & Rehabilitation Center. Thirty ambulances and six buses transported all of the residents to similar facilities in neighboring communities, the paper reported.
