Legacy Healthcare, a Skokie, IL-based provider of skilled, rehab, transitional and specialized care, was rated No. 1 Wednesday, when Fortune announced its Best Workplaces for Aging Services lists for 2022. Legacy was first in the small- to medium-sized providers category after finishing third a year ago.
Meanwhile, Citadel Healthcare, another Skokie, IL-based operator offering skilled care services, was named No. 2 in the large-size companies division (1,000 or more employees). Citadel also is no stranger to top-five finishes on the Fortune lists.
Fifty companies that provide skilled nursing, senior living or a combination of services were honored on Fortune’s fifth annual Great Places to Work lists. They are published in partnership with people analytics firm Great Place to Work and Activated Insights, the senior care affiliate of Great Place to Work.
In all, Fortune recognized a total of 65 workplaces in long-term care this year: 25 large senior living and care employers, 25 small- to medium-sized senior living and care employers, and 15 home care companies.
Skilled nursing well represented
After Legacy (see its review here,) five other operators offering some form of skilled nursing care landed in top-11 spots in the smaller-provider division: Tulsa-based Senior Star (5); West Palm Beach, FL-based Morselife (7); Dallas-headquartered Buckner Retirement Services (9); Galloway Ridge of Pittsboro, NC (10); and Plymouth Place in LaGrange, IL (11).
In the large-company division, Citadel (see its review here) finished behind only Baltimore-based Brightview Senior Living, which made it four years in a row as No. 1.
Other providers in the top 10 of that division offering significant skilled nursing services were Louisville, KY-bsed Trilogy (4) and WesleyLife of Johnston, IA (5).
‘Great Place’ methodology explained
More than 243,000 employees were invited to be surveyed across 4,220 locations to fuel calculations for this year’s lists. The rankings come after an analysis of the survey responses of more than 140,000 employees.
To be certified as a Great Place to Work, operators must survey all of their employees using a “trust index survey” that includes 60 questions. Providers earn Great Place to Work certification if at least 70% employees surveyed confirm that an employer is a great place to work. Once certified, operators automatically are included in Fortune’s ranking process. Fortune and Great Place to Work then take the employee certification data and run it through an algorithm that adjusts for factors such as company size and consistency of all employee experience. The adjusted scores of each operator are then ranked.
