Kim Eichinger, the executive director of fitness for Pennsylvania-based Country Meadows Retirement Communities, says the HydroWorx’s treadmills are an effective form of exercise for a broad range of residents.

The treadmills are placed in pools with an average water temperature of 92 degrees; most residents use one while standing/walking in about four feet of water. Eichinger says that walking on underwater treadmills allows for a more natural gait, which makes muscles work harder.

“We like it for just about everybody,” Eichinger says. “I like to use it for people who may not be able to follow exercise routines, but for whom walking comes really naturally. It’s great for people with balance issues or people who are fearful of walking on land.”

Eichinger even has a resident who needs a walker on land but is able to run when using the treadmill.

Aquatic therapy
HydroWorx’s underwater treadmills can be used for low-impact cardio workouts and to assist residents with gait and balance training. They also feature a resistance therapy jet for enhanced rehabilitation and conditioning.
