Multiple Chronic Conditions: A Strategic Framework
Help is on the way for Americans who suffer from multiple chronic conditions, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Strategic Framework on Multiple Chronic Conditions” highlights the department’s initiative to more efficiently treat and prevent those who have, and those who may develop, more than one ongoing health problem. The report outlines how the HHS will collaborate with other state and public agencies to coordinate responses to the proposed programs.
More than a quarter of all Americans and two out of three older adults suffer from multiple conditions, according to HHS. Also, treatment for these individuals accounts for 66% of the U.S. healthcare budget.
“Given the number of Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions, focusing on the integration and coordination of care for this population is critical to achieve better care and health for beneficiaries, and lower costs through greater efficiency and quality,” Dr. Donald Berwick, head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said in a statement.
