The government’s ratings for nursing homes diverge wildly from consumers’ personal ratings, new study results show.

Researchers at the University of California-Irvine created an iPad app called Nursing Home Compare Plus, which allowed hospital patients to see a customized list of nursing homes rated according to their personal needs and preferences, which researchers endorse.

The top quality measures chosen by the consumers varied from those used by the government to create Nursing Home Compare ratings, said researcher Dana B. Mukamel, Ph.D. Consumers, for example, ranked pain and staffing higher than inspection results.
