Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen (R) has called for a “fundamental restructuring” of long-term care in his state, including expanding options beyond nursing home care.

Bredesen proposed a $20.7 million expansion of community care in his State of the State address on Jan 28. State Republicans embraced the governor’s proposal, which had long been championed by the Tennessee branch of the GOP.

Expanding long-term care options, says the governor, will allow private companies to provide at-home care for the elderly. Many people don’t need the level of care that nursing homes provide, he said.
