One or more surveys used by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for its nursing home quality Web site – Nursing Home Compare —- were missing for 19% of the nation’s nursing homes, according to an investigation by the Inspector General’s office.

In response to the investigation, a heated Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told the agency to “step up to the plate and address the concerns” in a letter to CMS Administrator Mark McClellan.

The Inspector General’s office charged that site’s missing data undermines the Web site’s effectiveness and credibility.  The Web site is meant to give consumers vital information on nursing homes, so consumers trust their choices and nursing homes work to improve quality.
