Improving employee competency testing in long-term care can help reduce rehospitalizations and workplace injuries, while improving overall resident care, an industry expert emphasized recently.

Competency testing, such as incident simulations or online modules, can improve workplace issues, said Linda Shubert, MSN, RN, CHSE, of River Garden Hebrew Home Senior Services.

She delivered her pointed comments at the NADONA national conference in June.

“Why would you competency test?” Shubert asked rhetorically. “The biggest question would be why would you not competency test, especially since all the stakeholders are asking for it. Research shows competency and care quality go hand in hand,” she said.
