Electrical brain stimulation helps recent stroke patients who have difficulty with swallowing after a stroke, a study found. Up to half experience such problems.
Duke University investigators evaluated 14 patients who had experienced a stroke between one and 10 days prior to trial enrolment, and divided them in into two groups. The first group received mild stimulation to different areas of the brain. The stimulation helped 86% of the patients have an easier time swallowing, compared to 43% in the group that did not receive the stimulation treatment.
The study was published online in the journal Stroke.
