The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced Thursday it is again pushing back the deadline for compliance with a set of claims transmission standards.

CMS says it will not enforce the required switch to ASC X12 Version 5010 standards for the electronic transmission of healthcare claims until after June 30, 2012. The agency had pushed back the deadline last fall to March 31.

5010 upgrades are designed to provide clearer instructions, reduce confusion in different transactions, and eliminate redundant data, but many long-term care providers have struggled to move forward with the update. Providers have to upgrade to 5010 before ICD-10 codes can be reported.
