Cancer is the top killer for all Americans under the age of 85, according to new research.

Cancer’s death rate passed that of heart disease for the first time, according to the American Cancer Society’s annual report.

While the death rate from both diseases is declining, the rate for heart disease has declined at a greater pace. When the death rates for people age 85 and older are factored in, heart disease retains its lead. This age group accounts for 1.6% of the population in the United States.
