Texas — Texas state Sen. Nathan Johnson (D) wants the state to expand Medicaid during the coronavirus pandemic.

In an April op-ed, he wrote that COVID-19 brings a new urgency, saying the expansion could be a tool to provide care to “those most in need” while combating the virus.

Typically, long-term care providers have opposed expansion because it would mean less federal dollars for nursing homes.

“Today we have overwhelming public and business support, successful conservative models, greater flexibility, an even higher level of need, profound urgency and, as part of the federal COVID-19 crisis response, billions of federal dollars that can be employed to ensure that Medicaid expansion in Texas is a fiscal and healthcare success,” he argued.
