Funding cuts to Medicare and Social Security aren’t out of the question following recent comments by President Donald Trump.

Providers take issue with Trump’s budget

Trump stated Wednesday that “at some point [entitlement cuts] will be” on his agenda while speaking during an interview with CNBC. He added that cutting entitlement spending is the “easiest of all things.”

“Well, we’re going — we’re going to look,” Trump said. “We also have assets that we’ve never had. I mean we’ve never had growth like this.”

White House spokesman Judd Deere reportedly noted that there have been no benefit cuts under Trump and that the president has kept “his commitment to the most vulnerable Americans, especially those who depend on Medicare and Social Security.”

This isn’t the first time, however, that Medicare funding has faced uncertainty under Trump. The president suggested a spending cut of more than $800 billion for the Medicare program over the next decade in his 2020 budget proposal. An analysis later showed that 11% of the cuts would directly hit seniors.
